Workshop 3-04
GEF/World Bank Regional climate, water and agriculture: Impacts on and adaptation of agro-ecological systems in Africa. "Understanding and Adapting to Climate Change: What can the World Learn from Africa's Experience." December 13-16 in Zaragoza, Spain.

This workshop is funded by the Trust Fund for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (TFESSD) with complementary sponsorship from the GEF, CEEPA, Meditarranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), Agricultural and Rural Development Department and the Africa Region of the World Bank, the World Bank Institute, and the FAO.

The workshop is the final of three annual workshops which form part of the project activities aimed at ensuring consistency in approach and quality control necessary to provide a regional assessment of the vulnerability of African agriculture to climate change, and adaptation options, and to strengthen the local capacity to address these issues. This workshop will focus on (i) a rigorous review and critical evaluation of the preliminary empirical results of the national studies and provide suggestions for improving the analyses and interpretation of study results and findings and their policy implications; (ii) a review and evaluation of the results of the regional assessment studies on the potential economic and hydrological impacts and crop responses of climate change on agro-ecosystems in Africa and the various adaptation options. These will be complemented by presentations of similar studies in Latin America and Israel, as well as adaptation studies by the Environment Department of the World Bank.

Participants are mainly from country teams undertaking the study in the eleven African countries, and International experts in the field of climate change, agriculture and adaptations strategies from the World Bank, Yale University, and the University College of London. There would also be participants from Latin America and Israel.
