| Background
A number of institutions collaborated over the past few years to support research work and capacity in development and use of natural resource and environmental accounting (NRA) in Africa. In 1997, the Beijer International Institute (BII), in collaboration with the Environmental Economics Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (EENESA), supported an initiative to bring together a group of environmental economists from several countries in eastern and southern Africa who met at a workshop to develop a strategy and plans for furthering NRA efforts in the region. The workshop produced a proposal for establishing a network for NRA in the region, and the Resource Accounting Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (RANESA) was then born with funding from Sida of Sweden in 1998. |
The network is coordinated from the Environmental Economics and Policy Program at the Department of Agricultural Economics, which is now the Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) at the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa in collaboration with the BII. Training of developers and users of NRA and policy makers is a major activity of RANESA. Two Technical Training and Research Workshops are held every year. One other major activity of RANESA is provision of Research Grants to fund research on construction and use of NRA in support of analytical capacity, empirical research results and information and development of improved environmental statistics and sustainability indicators. RANESA also supports various advocacy and networking activities to promote awareness among various sectors of the civic society in government, private sector and NGO groups through Policy Workshops, Research Reports, Newsletters, Policy Briefs and a website among others. |

Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) The network has a RAC providing technical guidance and support, which reviews programs and activities, advises on design and research matters and whose members serve as resources in training and research workshops.
