Introduction
One of the main objectives
of RANESA is to provide support to research activities and work in the
development and use of environmental accounts for integrated macro economic
and environmental management. This will be provided through annual research
grants to fund research activities attempting to construct and integrate
NRA modules into economic models for development planning and policy analysis.
Accordingly, RANESA is inviting proposals for funding during its first
year of operation.
Amount and Number of Grants
Up to five fully developed
proposals will be funded every year if adequate submissions of projects
were successful. Projects will be funded for up to the maximum of US$ 10,000
per grant. Given current capacity constraints in this area in the region,
RANESA will also consider supporting preliminary efforts to properly design
fully developed research project proposals and plans through smaller grants.
Concept proposals for projects with good potential and high probability
of success are therefore also invited. This may accordingly mean that more
than five grants can be made in a year in various combinations of full
and concept proposals.
Eligibility
RANESA will only consider
proposals and concept proposals for conducting NRA work in countries of
the eastern and southern Africa (E&SA) region. Grants may be given
to individual researchers, institutions and research teams based within
or outside the E&SA region. In the case of proposals for conducting
applied environmental accounting research higher priority will be accorded
to proposals that involve, or to be conducted in collaboration with national
agencies that are essentially the natural home for providing or using NRA.
This is to ensure that the funded research activities do not only remain
academic intellectual exercises removed from the institutional setting
within which economic development planning and environmental policy are
made and implemented. This is very crucial for sensitizing policy makers
to the usefulness of NRA and for its future institutionalization within
the countries of the region. However, proposals with a good potential to
contribute to an Africa-based developments and refinement of the theory
of NRA are especially encouraged.
Submitted proposals must
follow the standard format generally used for preparation of research proposals.
Essential elements of a research proposal include clearly defined research
questions and problem to be addressed, objectives and expected products
and benefits of the research. These should be motivated with strong justification
for undertaking the proposed research work, especially with respect to
contributions to RANESA's objective of strengthening capacity in environmental
accounting. Familiarity with the relevant literature and the environmental
accounting approaches and methods will enhance the strength of the proposal.
Submissions
Concept proposals must contain
well-developed pre-proposal ideas, research questions and objectives. Submissions
(including CV's and detailed budgets) must be made to the following address:
